Wholesale & Surplus Lines Brokers

Accounting for wholesale and surplus lines brokers

Wholesale and surplus lines brokers placing non-standard risk, often with layered commission flows, non-admitted or foreign carriers, and multi-currency transactions.

The pain points we hear

  • Layered commission flows between retailers, wholesaler, and carrier
  • Non-standard and foreign carriers with irregular statements
  • Multi-currency placements complicating reconciliation
  • Trust handling across currencies and parties
  • Thin reporting on where the margin actually is

How we help

  • Layered commission accounting across all parties
  • Reconciliation of non-standard and foreign carrier statements
  • Multi-currency transaction handling in the books
  • Premium trust reconciliation across currencies
  • Margin and revenue reporting owners can act on

Layered placements, layered accounting

Wholesale and surplus lines accounting is complicated by how many parties sit inside a single transaction. One placement can involve a retail broker, the wholesaler, and one or more carriers — often non-standard, sometimes foreign — with commission split across the chain. The gross premium, the retail commission, the wholesale commission, and the net owed to the carrier all have to be tracked on the same transaction.

Carrier statements are the hard part. Non-standard and foreign markets do not report on a common format or a reliable schedule, and some report in a different currency than the placement was written in. Reconciling those means holding the exchange rate used at binding, at collection, and at remittance — otherwise the difference lands in the books as an unexplained variance instead of a foreign exchange gain or loss.

Trust handling inherits all of it, since premium held for clients and carriers may span currencies and the position has to be demonstrably sufficient in each. Margin reporting is the payoff: on layered business the brokerage's real take is the spread between what came in and what went out, and that number stays invisible without clean transaction-level accounting.
